Kintsugi is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with golden lacquer to make it beautiful once more. In fact, the pottery becomes so beautiful that its value actually increases. Will you repair the most pottery and come out on top? Well, the good news is, even if you don’t, you’ll still have some beautiful pieces in your collection! Let’s get to work.
What Is It?
Drafting – Each round, players will snake draft 2 cards from the offer. Players can either add these to their collection or sell them for gold. They will need gold to repair broken pottery pieces later.
Set Collection – Each piece of pottery has its own unique scoring, (i.e. pairs, majority, etc) so players will need to collect pieces in various sets in order to score well.
Who Is It For?
- 2 to 4 Players – Scales well at any count
- Ages 8 & Up / Light-Weight Game Fans – Very small and approachable ruleset
- Fans of drafting and set collection
PROS
- Aesthetics – Great art
- Components – Nice quality cards and gold pieces
- Approachable to a wide audience
- Rules are clear and well-written
- Drafting is very smooth and quick
- I like that you always know one thing that will break (top of deck card) so you can be a little strategic in your drafting
- Easy to keep track of unbroken vs broken vs repaired items
- Unique theme
CONS
- The bowl and cup symbols are very similar looking
- I wish the reference cards had the scoring listed
- The gold is very likely to run out with 4 or even 3 players. I wish the box had been a bit bigger so more could have been included, since the rules mention that they aren’t limited
- I wish a score pad was included since there are a lot of different items
Final Thoughts
I thought this has a unique theme that worked well with the mechanisms. Rounds were very smooth and although the game is pretty short at any player count, it still has a nice trajectory. It feels really satisfying at game end when you have a whole bunch of beautiful repaired pottery. Because of it’s length it does feel a little too light for me to want to play super often, but it’s a nice filler, or just great for big fans of light and short card games!
