Are you ready, gamers? I hope that’s a big “Aye, aye!”
So, as you may know, we’ve looked at Fluxx before as well as Jumanji Fluxx, and even Marvel Fluxx! But today, we’ve got a new theme and a loveable sponge and all his friends to feature! Get ready to visit that pineapple under the sea in this latest edition of the favorite fluctuating card game!

What Is It?

A newly themed version of Fluxx featuring all your favorite critters and characters from Bikini Bottom. It’s pretty similar to standard Fluxx, no fancy new rules, but with a few new well-themed action and (in-game) rule cards to keep things fresh!

Who Is It For?

Fans of classic Fluxx are bound to enjoy this one as well, especially if you’re fans of Spongebob Squarepants as well! It’s a very approachable theme, so it’ll be great for kids and adults alike, as well as great to introduce to non-gaming fans of the show.

Quality + Components

The game is predominantly cards, all of average quality. I will say though, I thought there was a huge improvement over past versions in the art – Other versions I’ve played all have white backgrounds on every card, but these have colored/thematic backgrounds that make you feel like you’re under the sea too! I love it!

Like other newer versions of the game, this also comes with a turn coin which is just a lightweight poker chip. The stickers are fun and shiny. The sticker on one side of mine had a wrinkle in it, but I hope that’s not an error in all copies.

The rules are easy to ready and learn from, and the box holds everything pretty well. Although, if you get the specialty edition of the game, with bonus cards, the cards do sit a little above the insert. I do wish the box had finger holes on the sides of the cover, to make it easier to open, because it can be a little tight, but otherwise it’s a-okay!

PROS

  • Really aesthetically appealing cards
  • No creepers!
  • Some funny on-theme cards (i.e. talk like a cartoon and imagination!)
  • Inviting theme for all ages

CONS

  • The coin is cool looking but isn’t super necessary unless the rule regarding it comes out. I’d almost say always including the coin rule as a basic rule might make it interesting!

Final Thoughts

At this point, you all know I love a good game of Fluxx, and this one sure is good! I’ve always really liked Spongebob since I was little, and I thought they pulled things into the game nicely, so I have no problem recommending this to any fans of the game and the show! Enjoy! 🙂
