Who doesn’t love a comfy, cozy quilt? Especially when you don’t actually have to learn how to sew it yourself! Now, you can create cozy quilts for cuddly kitties from your computer with Quilts and Cats of Calico on Steam! Create the best patterns, collect plenty of buttons, and attract as many cute little cats as you can! Good luck!
What Is It?
Digital – A digital implementation of AEG’s Calico board game
Tile Laying / Pattern Building – Players will place one patch tile on their quilt board, trying to create groups of colors or patterns to complete goal tiles, earn buttons, and attract cats
Open Drafting – After placing, players will take one of the 3 tiles available to add to their hand
Who Is It For?
- 1 to 4 Players – You can play solo challenges, or play with 1-4 human players and or use 1-3 AI players as needed
- Ages 10 & Up – While the puzzle of the game can be tricky, it does have a great detailed tutorial to walk you through the first game, and a story mode, which introduces a little bit of game at a time, so it’s approachable for a wide age range
- Fans of digital board games / Calico, who want a digital version
- Fans of pattern building and puzzley games
PROS
- Aesthetics – Love the colors and the art in the game
- Interactive cats that you can pet!
- You can create and customize your own cats which you can use in games too!
- AI turns are very quick
- Lots of customization options – number of players, AI difficulty, which cats to use, story mode, et cetera
- Smooth/responsive
- Easy to undo moves
- Love when a computer can do all the scoring math for me on the objective tiles
CONS
- Random/Luck – Luck of the draw on the tiles, may have a lot of turns where you don’t love your choices
- That cats can be a little annoying as they walk around the game screen (but you can turn this setting off)
Final Thoughts
I really enjoy Calico, but most people I play board games with don’t feel the same, so I don’t have anyone to play it with. This is an excellent implementation and let’s me play in so many ways, which is the best part. I like the solo challenges in both the board game and digital version, but I love that with the digital version I am able to also play a multi-player game without needing actual players. I also like that you can adjust the difficulty of the AI, so it feels even a little bit more like a realistic game with players.
If you like Calico and want a great virtual experience, you definitely need to check this out. And if you’re interested in trying Calico for the first time, I think this is a great place to start! (As long as you enjoy playing things digitally).
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll just be over here making quilts and attempting to get all of the game trophies!
