No matter what your favorite Christmas movie or television show is, it’ll be a perfect fit for Christmas Movie Magic! Watch, score, and be merry with everyone this holiday season. Let’s check it out!
What Is It?
Matching – As players watch their Christmas movie, they’ll be trying to keep an eye out for the items on the cards in their hands in order to score points
Set Collection – Players can earn bonus points for having the largest set of cards of the same suit
Who Is It For?
- 1 to 4 Players – Solo wasn’t super interesting to me, but 2 to 4 are all good. Could add more players if you wanted to do teams too, potentially
- Ages 6 & Up / Family and Light-Weight Gamers – Simple ruleset, great for the whole family
- Fans of Christmas movies who want to gamify movie night
Variants
Son of a Nutcracker – Ages 21+ – Give a drink when you score a card – I thought this was a fun twist for players who want a Christmas drinking game. It only gets harder as you play, haha!
It’s the Season of Perpetual Hope – Play in rounds, ends when someone gets 8 cards. Score as normal and start a new round – I wasn’t as big on this because it distracts mid-movie to score and restart, causing you to interrupt the movie, or pause it for an extended time.
Keep the Change, Ya Filthy Animal – When someone has a matchign card, they say “Christmas Magic” and then one player gets to guess what’s on the card. If they guess right, they get the card – Definitely a little more “gamey.” Good for slightly older players (maybe 10 or 12+) and a nice change to vary play
Solo – 4 cards in hand. Can refresh hand if you discard a scored card. Just try to score as high as you can / beat your best score – It’s okay, but not for me. I think solo, I’d rather watch the movie without the game. But if you want to add gaming to your solo movie night, it’s fun!
PROS
- Aesthetics – Good graphic design. The art is simple but cute
- Decent variety on the cards
- Variants are a fun way to keep the game fresh
- Scoring is simple
- Quick set-up, clean-up, and teach
- Approachable for a wide age range
CONS
- Not all the cards will work for every Christmas movie.
- You could also get unlucky at times if you draw a card right after you saw that thing on screen
- On the other hand, in some movies, you’ll get through the cards really fast, well before the movie is over
Final Thoughts
I thought this game was super cute! It’s so easy to pull out for any family Christmas movie night, and it’s so approachable that everyone can play! Some cards are definitely harder in some movies than others, but overall, it works well with most movies, and I think it’ll be a hit for the holidays!
