Itching to get the conversation flowing? Try Sparks! Inspired by late night talks under the stars, players will answer questions about their pasts, presents, and futures in order to deepen relationships and build more meaningful connections with those around them. Let’s check it out!

A story-telling card game where players answer questions / share things about themselves. Questions can be about anything – life goals, love, memories, and much more. After players have drawn and answered a card from the past, present, and future they will have 3 symbols that form a Constellation. They’ll then read and answer the final question from their Constellation card, which will end the game.

  • 2 to 8 Players – Any count works, just depends on who you want to share answers with. The decks are pretty large too, so you could easily play with a slightly larger group if you’d like
  • Ages 16 and Up – The answers depend on players, but I think given the nature of the game and the idea of getting into deep conversations, I wouldn’t recommend this to younger players, I’d go young adult to adult
  • Players who will take the questions seriously and want to give real answers
  • Fans of icebreaker-esque questions and answers

  • Aesthetics – Cards are simple, but have a nice graphic design and great silver foil designs. I also like that the decks gradate into different shades of purple
  • Easy / quick set-up and clean-up
  • Good variety of questions
  • I like that it mentions that it’s okay to skip a question and draw a new one if a player doesn’t want to answer something
  • Fairly small / portable; doesn’t need much table space
  • Rules are clear / short and sweet
  • No real restrictions on answers (i.e. length, time limit, or rules about giving “joke” answers – hence my note of who it’s for)
  • No “win / loss” conditions

I liked the vibe of this, and if you’re looking for something to initiate conversations / discussions, or even looking for something to use for journaling or writing prompt inspiration, I think this is great.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of people I’d be able to play it with often, so I don’t see myself coming back to it much. But, I definitely think there are a lot of people out there who are really going to be able to enjoy it in their groups! If this is your style of activity with friends and family, it does have some great questions, so you should check it out!
