Are you looking for an arduous, challenging, 2-4 hour game for your most intense gamer group? Well…this is not the game you are looking for. BUT! If you’re looking for a quick, simple game that’s great for every group and family and is easy to take everywhere, the boy howdy do I have a game for you! In The Potion you’ll want to out-bluff your opponents to be the best alchemist around! Let’s dive in! I’ll try to keep it short and sweet, just like the game itself!
What Is It?
An epic, rapid match of bluffing and outwitting opponents for 3-7 willing alchemists! Your only goal: get rid of ingredients until you only have one type left so you can take control of the amazing and coveted potion!
Who Is It For?

One of the best things about this game is that it is great for everyone! Non-gamers can enjoy it because it’s quick and simple while experienced gamers can appreciate it as a nice light filler or travel game. The game itself recommends ages 8+ which I think is a great point of reference as well.
Quality of Components
The dice are a nice quality and the images are very clear on them. The ingredient tokens are also high quality, a nice sturdy plastic rather than cardboard pieces, which is very nice since you have to hold them the whole game. And I love the bottle that everything is stored in. It’s thematic and also a nice study case for the pieces. My only complaint about that is that it’s a little inconvenient for the rules, but I still prefer only using the bottle to keeping it in the plastic packaging it was originally in because that’s so much harder to store.
PROS
- Fast and simple to learn, teach, and play
- Super light mechanics so it’s great for families, non-gamers, all ages – everyone!
- Conveniently small package so it’s great for travel. Play it at the airport, and bring it to all the family gatherings!
- It’s great that it plays such a high number of people because many lighter games don’t
- Also fun that it has some bluffing because most bluffing games are longer/more difficult. Good introductory game for the mechanic.
CONS
- Some groups can get a definite feeling of indifference to it because it is so quick and simple. The turns are pretty much the same thing over and over so if you’re not into it right away, chances are you won’t be as it continues.
Difficulty
Definitely lower on the difficulty scale. It’s a little difficult at first to realize what you need to play in comparison to what was rolled, but after that it is smooth sailing! I’ll give this one a 2/5 for difficulty.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I think this is a great game to pull out at really any time. So simple and quick that I think you could not only convince anyone to play it, but you could even use it as a stepping stone for so many other things and who knows? Maybe you’ll have a few new gamer friends by the end! Would definitely recommend this one!
Happy Gaming~
